The Young Fresh Fellows - Because We Hate You

Here's something odd: Scott McCaughey is the bandleader of both The Young Fresh Fellows and The Minus 5. Just because he's awesome and he can, he released two albums, one by each of his bands, but put them both in the same case. That's right. This is one half of a double-disc set. One disc is The Young Fresh Fellows and the other is The Minus 5. They're both full-length albums, and could easily stand independent of each other. Scott McCaughey did it because he could and because he knew guys like me would buy it.

Anyway, The Young Fresh Fellows half of this set is as great as you'd expect. It's jangly and delicious. There are a few odd tracks like "My Drum Set" that serve to remind that The Young Fresh Fellows are as strange as they are brilliant. "For the Love of a Girl" is one of the best songs in their catalogue and it shows that jangle pop, a genre generally limited to the 1980's and early 1990's, is not entirely dead or outdated. This is a solid album, which is more than you'd expect from half of a two-fer.
