Self - Breakfast With Girls

Let's just get this out in the open: Matt Mahaffey is a weird guy. He's super smart, super talented, and from all accounts an extremely hard worker when it comes to getting his music the way he wants it. Even so, you get the feeling that he makes music to please himself and nobody else, which is why it's a bit hard to enjoy his albums at times (though not all of them. Some of them are just too brilliant to be ignored).

Breakfast With Girls is a bit maddening because it seems to wander aimlessly without a recognizable melody for minutes at a time. There are also moments in which the album breaks into gorgeous and blissful pop. You sort of have to take the good with the bad as far as Matt Mahaffey is concerned, and the scales don't tip far enough toward the good on Breakfast With Girls.
